Further CIPC exceedance threatens product withdrawal

27 June 2014

CIPC remains under continuing intense scrutiny, recently exacerbated by a further maximum residue level (MRL) exceedance in a box store containing crop intended for the fish and chip trade.

The regulatory situation with CIPC is now such that any MRL exceedance could trigger its withdrawal from use, which would have a profound impact on our industry.

If you use CIPC, you must check and adhere to the statutory conditions of use and, now more than ever, it is critical that users adopt best practice. The easiest way of doing this is to use an NAAC applicator. The Be CIPC Compliant website, from the Potato Industry CIPC Stewardship Group has all the information needed to help growers and store managers remain within the regulatory requirements and still keep their stored crops in optimum conditions.

Last year, important changes were made to product labels. These will still apply and in addition, this year there will be changes to the dose of CIPC that can be applied:
  • Total dose limits for 2014-15 to every stored crop will be 58g/t and 30g/t for processing and fresh crops respectively,
  • The maximum individual dose is now 18g/tonne
  • The minimum harvest interval (ie: the time elapsed between CIPC application and sale of crop) will be extended to a minimum of 14 days.

Growers and store managers also need to be aware that future availability and use of CIPC may be subject to having certain types of store ventilation systems in operation. The CIPC Stewardship Group and the team at Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research will be keeping industry updated on this, and all related information.
