8 June 2015
Chris Taylor, 26, management trainee, East Yorkshire

Growing up in South Wales, Chris gained practical farming experience prior to studying at Usk Agricultural College, and Harper Adams University College.

After graduating, Chris was accepted on to The Co-operative Farms Graduate Management Program and joined the team at the Goole Estate in June 2012.

“The Goole estate grows approximately 120ha of main crop pre-pack potatoes for long-term storage,” says Chris.

“It’s been a great start, I’ve been involved in all technical aspects of the crop from overseeing planting, harvesting and grading operations, to blight spraying and crop burn off. We are in a crucial time of the season ensuring that 5,500 tonnes is safely stored by variety, field and size fraction.”

“Good information is vital. A crucial aspect has been using the crop intelligence from our regular test digs, QC analysis and hot boxing to make the best decision for each stored load.”

As well developing his practical and business skills, Chris has had the opportunity to sharpen his technical knowledge and has attended AHDB Potatoes events during the summer and courses including the renowned Store Managers’ course at Sutton Bridge Crop Research.

“I’m heading to Harrogate this November, it’s pretty much essential for anyone involved in the potato industry to be there. I’m keen to see new machinery and get the latest technical advice there,” concludes Chris.
