Presenting potatoes as a good food, while gaining additional support

The big question at the moment is what does a good food look like, whether from a health or sustainability perspective. We act as a knowledge house for Government, providing research and evidence to key decision makers, as well as supplying NFU, NFUS and FPSA with information that can be used to campaign for change.  By working with Government and our partner organisations, we can position potatoes in a positive light, ensuring that the industry receives the support it needs.

We have recently been working with the Department of Health, demonstrating the significant health benefits of fresh potatoes and supplying our potato recipes for inclusion on their website.  With this in mind, the Department of Health ‘NHS Choices’ website now lists potatoes in their skins as a good source of fibre, alongside wholegrains. In addition, the ‘Change4Life’ website has doubled the number of potato-based recipes by including a range of inspiring and balanced meal ideas.

Working with Scottish MSPs is also important, as Scotland is a key potato growing region. Claire Baker MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, recently chaired a roundtable to discuss support for potato consumption, organised by AHDB Potatoes.  The event was attended by potato growers, retailers, health experts and politicians and has resulted in commitment from Scottish Parliament towards working together on shared projects.
