Over the last 30 years, the white potato cyst nematode (Globodera pallida) has progressively replaced the yellow species (Globodera rostochiensis) throughout most of England and Wales. In 2002, PCN were detected in 64% of 484 fields in England and Wales that had grown potatoes the previous year. Of these infestations, 60% were wholly G. pallida whilst 25% were a mixture of both species.

A previous AHDB Potatoes funded  project led to the production of a computer based model for the integrated control of G. pallida. Initially, the model was essentially an educational tool, enabling different PCN control strategies to be examined. This project has involved development of the model, prior to it being made more widely available.

Further data on varietal tolerance to PCN is available from the related project, R264, and has been used to update the model (Dec 06).
