Potato Weekly - 02 November 2018

Publication Date:
2 November 2018

This week was mixed for the potatoes sector. The English packing market received a lift from a pick up in trade, while Scottish trade was largely stable. The bag trade largely cooled, and a quality split in trade was reported. Lifting progress was also mixed, with progress made in the East and South, however conditions were more challenging further north.

  • Trade in the English packing market was reportedly busy this week, with prices generally stable on the week for Maris Piper and King Edward.
  • A steady packing market was reported in Scotland this week, with little change in prices seen in reds and whites.
  • Trade in the bag market was reportedly slower this week, with the “festivities” of Halloween, bonfire night and even Christmas all suggested as possible draws of consumer spending in lieu of fresh potatoes. The market for certain varieties has become somewhat two-tiered. Best chipping material, with a good size and bag count is commanding a significant premium over poorer, smaller samples or those containing secondary growth.
