Potato Weekly - 04 January 2019

Publication Date:
4 January 2019

With a short week following the New Year celebrations, and with many farms closed, trade has been a little subdued. Although demand has been reported by some as stronger than usual for the time of year. Over the festive period, prices have held steady as repeat orders have kept potato markets moving, and some are under pressure to open stores.

  • Trade was reportedly slow in the English packing market during the first week of the year, based mostly on repeat orders.

  • Trade in the packing market was reported as good for the time year with a large proportion of the free-buy material destined to travel south of the border.

  • Owing to the festive period and shorter week, traded volumes have been thin and demand from chip shops has been subdued. Although as many farm stores are remaining closed until the start of next week, supply and demand remained balanced.
