Potato Weekly - 14 December 2018

Publication Date:
14 December 2018

Limited free-buy trade was conducted in most markets this week. Demand in the chipping sector was subdued and the majority of trade in the packing and processing markets took place under contract. There were reports of increased supply of lower quality material entering the market as some growers unloaded ‘at risk’ material ahead of Christmas.

  • Movement in the English packing market was reportedly mixed this week. However, the consensus remains that trade is slowing and unlikely to pick up this side of Christmas.
  • Free-buy trade of Scottish packing potatoes was reportedly a little quieter than last week, with several businesses mostly covered by contracted supplies ahead of Christmas. Demand from south of the border was also down on the week, with few supplies moving into England.
  • A fairly uneventful week was reported for the bag market this week, with sparse chip shop trade stifling demand. Samples with good quality and low bag counts remain limited and continue to demand a significant premium over average samples.
