Potato Weekly - 19 April 2019

Publication Date:
23 April 2019

With ideal conditions for planting continuing, and packers reportedly ‘stocked up’, trade in free-buy markets has stayed generally quiet.

  • Marketing has taken a backseat for many this week as planting continues in full swing, with availability slightly tightening as a result. The early crop appears to be developing well at this stage. Many this week reported concerns around dryness. Irrigation availability and potential abstraction restrictions will be a key watch point moving into the summer.
  • Limited demand was reported from the English packing market this week with most packers reporting having adequate contracted volumes to meet the Easter demand.
  • A lack of free-buy trade was reported in the Scottish packing market this week. With local packhouses utilising contracted supplies, the bulk of movement continues to be into English markets.
  • Demand from the continent reported to have remained ‘strong’ this week.
