Potato Weekly - 27 July 2018

Publication Date:
27 July 2018

With another week of little significant precipitation, drought continues to be a major concern even in irrigated areas, resulting in reduced yields and higher dry matter content. Limited old crop (2017) trade was reported for the bag trade with the majority switching over to new crop. However, supplies of old crop remain for the packing and processing sectors.

  • Trade was reportedly quiet this week in the English packing market as old crop stores empty. The quality of material is slowly deteriorating as the hot summer continues, with sellers moving stock which is turning. Prices are generally holding steady at week earlier levels.

  • Limited trade of freebuy white varieties was reported for old crop Scottish packing material, as demand remains poor.

  • The old crop chipping trade is drawing to a close as increasing amounts of new crop chipping supplies enter the free-buy market. However, the dry summer has been detrimental for the new crop to date, with recurring reports of small tuber sizes and low yields.
