Publication Date:

Free-buy prices have started to edge higher for many, reflecting limited availability and supply concerns. Cooler conditions have been welcomed, with forecast rain hoped to bring some relief to parched crops and improve harvest conditions.

  • In English packing, new crop salad continues to move well as more enters the market, with reports that specs have been widened to compensate for limited availability. Purchasers continue to focus demand on old crop supplies. This has resulted in an increase in old crop prices, particularly for best quality white samples.  New crop packing Marfona reached the market this week with interest reported from different markets.
  • Scottish packing trade remained fairly quiet this week, with M Piper and whites continuing to be moved to England. First reported volumes of new crop salads were traced this week.
  • Limited trade was reported in the bag market this week with the hot weather reported to be negatively impacting chip shop demand, despite the summer holidays. Although lacking demand, limited supply together with interest reported from the processing sector for new crop, led to price increases.
