Potato Weekly - Friday 17 August 2018

Publication Date:
17 August 2018

Free-buy prices continued to firm this week, with tightness of new crop supplies continuing to be a key driver. Lifting has progressed again this week although many, particularly in the South, are behind their usual progress. Drought conditions have left crops struggling to bulk but rain over the weekend was a relief for many.

  • Tight availability and delays in bulking of new crop supplies have seen old crop whites prices jump. Similarly new crop prices have been stable to firm this week. Specifications of salad potatoes have remained wide this week in order to manage the available supplies. Some packers remain focussed on contracted supplies.
  • Most reports this week placed demand as steady on the week, with limited activity taking place in the bag market. Supplies reportedly remain tight this week as a sizable proportion of growers are reportedly continuing to waiting for crops to bulk rather than lifting according to normal schedules.

  • Lifting gathers pace, as rain marginally relieves drought pressures
