Potato Weekly - Friday 25 May 2018

Publication Date:
25 May 2018

There were mixed fortunes for free-buy trade this week. Bag market trade increased with the spring bank holiday around the corner. However, packing movement was largely on contract. 2018 planting is now nearing completion and we have picked up our first reports of new crop trade.

  • Despite some seeing a pick-up in prices for packing whites and baking potatoes, many report a lacklustre market as buyers look to contracts to fulfil their requirements.

  • Much of the movement is on contract at the moment. Some imports of salad potatoes are reported to fill the gap before increasing volumes of Jersey crops become available in retailers in the coming weeks.

  • The bag market this week has seen regional increases in demand driven by expected bank holiday sales. However, with planting drawing to a close there has been an increase in the volume of potatoes available.
