Full Research Project Title: Integrating quality trait development with large scale gene expression analysis in potato
Duration: June 2007 - February 2008

Aim: To provide a comprehensive analysis of gene expression during important stages of the tuber life cycle, and to associate specific genes and their expression with the establishment of commercially important traits.

This project was carried out as a AHDB Potatoes-funded project at SCRI, however it benefited from complementary research funded by RERAD aimed at understanding the mechanisms that underpin texture and flavour, which have a great influence on consumer repeat purchases

Montrose, Pentland Dell and two Solanum phureja varieties, Mayan Gold and Inca Sun were compared to identify the genes involved in flavour and texture. Ultimately this will enable more targeted and efficient breeding for these quality traits.
