Storage Bulletin - May 2013

Publication Date:
28 May 2013

The majority of stores are now unloaded and it is time to start considering preparations and enhancements for next season.

A store audit from SBCSR is a good place to start. For a subsidised fee, the team can come out to levy payers’ stores, inspect the store set-up and provide advice on improvements and enhancements to improve performance and lower costs. A review of records from the season is also useful and can, depending on the information available, normally assess the relative performance of your store compared with industry.  Data gathered by Sutton Bridge shows a very wide range of running costs in commercial stores, varying by as much as 300% from the poorest to the best, so drilling down to the detail could really pay dividends.

Machinery maintenance, sensor calibration and basic store hygiene, to remove potential sources of disease carry-over, are also worthwhile to ensure optimum performance come the autumn. And don’t forget to get refrigeration equipment serviced. See our April bulletin for information on ‘F’ gas regulations:

CIPC update

Following on from our news in February of the impending review of CIPC by the Advisory Committee on Pesticides, the Potato Industry CIPC Stewardship Group has been actively involved in discussions with the Chemicals Regulation Directorate to press this forward - but it now looks as though the review won’t take place until July at the earliest. Plans are being put into place for a series of short meetings to promote best practice and to provide feedback on some of the issues which have been implicated in the detection of MRL exceedances.

Provisional dates and locations are as follows:
4 July  S Lincolnshire (at East Midlands Potato Day)
11 July (am) Cambridgeshire
11 July (pm) Norfolk
12 July  Essex
15 July  Herefordshire
16 July  Lancashire
17 July  Staffordshire/Shropshire
18 July  N Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire (at Storage Day – see below)
25 July  E Yorkshire
26 July   N Yorkshire
Venues and times to be announced shortly: see for further information.

Further BASIS training for potato store managers and advisors

To meet the demands of the Potato Industry CIPC Stewardship scheme (, specialist post-harvest training to BASIS standard should now be in place for all professional store managers and advisors recommending the use of CIPC.

Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research recently hosted a course and, following a change of venue to assist delegates, a second course is now being held at SBCSR on 11 & 12 June with the course exam on Friday 21 June.

The tutor for the course is again John Horrocks, a BASIS approved trainer with 38 years’ experience in the UK and European Potato Industry, who is UK BASIS and FACTS qualified.
