Biology of root knot nematodes in sugar beet crops

Some root knot nematode species affect sugar beet, with similar symptoms to the beet cyst nematode.

Root knot nematode is an important pest worldwide. Of the 50 described species, only a few infest sugar beet.

The life cycle is like that of the beet cyst nematode. Infested plants are stunted and tend to wilt in warm weather. Root knot nematodes cause galls to form on the lateral roots of plants. Where early infestations are severe, plants may die.

Control methods include the use of granular nematicides, trap cropping, lengthening the rotation and control of weed hosts.
