Assessment of variety tolerance to potato cyst nematode (PCN) damage (2010-2012)
Summary
A former AHDB Potatoes-funded project led to the production of a computer based model (PCN calculator) for the integrated control of the white potato cyst nematode, Globodera pallida. The model requires data on both varietal tolerance and varietal resistance to PCN. Resistance ratings are generated via National List testing. There are no independent assessments of varietal tolerance to PCN.
Trials were carried out over three years to assess varietal tolerance using a comparison of yields in nematicide-treated and untreated plots. These methods had been used in a previous project during 2005-2006.
